SHORT ANSWER

Navisworks itself cannot export IFC, so the model is converted directly instead. Veksle converts the .nwd or .nwc to IFC4 — upload one file, preview it, download the .ifc. No Autodesk software involved.

"Navisworks to IFC" is the same job whichever file you hold. Pick the one you have below; the conversion and the result are identical.

Which file do you have?

FileWhat it isGo to
.nwdA published Navisworks document — often a whole federated model in one fileConvert NWD to IFC
.nwcA cache file — one native CAD or Revit model exported to Navisworks' lightweight formatConvert NWC to IFC

Both convert on the same converter above; the split just points you at the page written for your case. Unsure which you have? NWD vs NWC vs NWF explains it in a line each.

What comes across

The output is IFC4 Design Transfer: every element an IfcBuildingElementProxy with triangulated geometry and its Navisworks properties, correctly placed. A coordination and viewing model — right for clash, coordination, quantities and openBIM handover.

Why not from inside Navisworks?

Because there is no IFC export in Navisworks — any edition, including the free viewer. The full explanation is on does Navisworks export IFC?

FAQ

Can Navisworks convert to IFC?

No — Navisworks has no IFC export in any edition. To get IFC out of a Navisworks model you convert the file with a standalone tool, which is what Veksle does.

Is the Navisworks-to-IFC conversion free?

Yes, while we are in launch. No account, no install, and files are deleted from the server after every conversion.

Does it handle both NWD and NWC?

Yes. Either format goes in and IFC4 comes out; the conversion is the same for both.

Do I need a Navisworks licence?

No. Nothing about the conversion touches Autodesk software — no install, no licence check.

Which IFC version is produced?

IFC4 Design Transfer, with elements as IfcBuildingElementProxy carrying geometry and properties.
